In 1890, an artist from Ohio picked up a pencil and captured Galveston’s streets in a way a photograph never quite could. George Elbert Burr — who would later become one of America’s most respected printmakers — was passing through Texas and stopped long enough to document what he saw.
This was before the 1900 hurricane — when Galveston was one of the biggest and most prosperous cities in the South — and thus, before the seawall. According to a commenter, in the 19th century, the city required buildings to have plank or brick sidewalks. I love learning new things about Galveston history.
